The Exhibition of Joža and Franta Úprka
In autumn, the exhibition of brothers Joža and Franta Úprka will take place in the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery. Both brothers are linked by fascination with the folk culture of Moravian Slovácko, region where the brothers were born. You can visit the exhibition from 14th September to 29th October 2017.
The older brother Jozo studied at the Academy first in Prague and then in Munich. Between 1892 and 1893, he visited Paris, where a he exhibited a painting at the Paris Salon for the first time in 1894. His paintings combine a modern impressionist view of the world with almost documentary interest in the folklore tradition of his native region.
Franta Úprkas journey to his artistic career was more complicated: he did not graduate from high school because of poor profits, therefore he was not accepted at the Academy and he spent the first years with auxiliary works in sculpture workshops. Later he managed to become independent and soon had separate exhibitions in Prague and abroad. His sculptures are also inspired by the folk culture of Slovácko and often represent traditional folk characters.
